Lap Band Surgery Lap Band Surgery is a bariatric (weight loss) surgery procedure that was approved by the FDA in 2001. Less invasive than many other weight loss surgical options, lap band surgery involves placing a special band called the LAP-BAND around the upper stomach in order to create a smaller stomach pouch that will limit the amount of food that a person can eat at any one time.
