Frostbite
Frostbite is damage to bodily tissues from exposure to intense cold, usually temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius, for an extended period of time. The tissue experiences a severe loss of water and oxygen, beginning with the sensation of pins and needles which then turns to numbness. The frozen skin first appears white, cold, and hard and then becomes red and swollen. The toes, fingers, and face are the areas most commonly affected. With severe cases of frostbite, permanent tissue damage can occur and the area must be removed.
